When it's time to take pictures you need to be prepared

Batteries
Spare batteries are essential. You don't want to be in the middle of a shoot and suddenly run out of power. If your camera doesn't take simple AA batteries when your batteries die you're in trouble. Even if your camera does take AA batteries you need to have some extras in your bag to avoid the hassle of having to stop in at a store. Having spare batteries will ensure that no matter what you'll have enough power to make it through the day.
Memory
You mustn't let lack of available memory keep you from taking pictures. Know what kind of memory your camera requires. Buy extra memory to keep with you in case of emergencies.
Lens Cloth
You never know when you might get a smudge on your lens. Having a microfiber lens cloth to keep your lenses clean will be invaluable. Dirty lenses can ruin a picture. Wiping your lens with just any old piece of cloth could ruin your lens. You don't want to do either. Keep your cloth in a sealed plastic bag so it doesn't get any grit on it that will scratch your lens.
Plastic Bags
Speaking of plastic bags having a couple in your camera bag would be a good move. When unexpected rain starts to fall you need a way to protect your camera. Putting a plastic bag with a hole cut in it for the lens isn't only useful in light rain. Whenever you take pictures in damp, misty environments you should cover your camera up. Plastic bags and rubber bands to secure the bags will do just that.
Filters
There are a couple of filters that I think are essential to keep with you. One is a UV filter. This filter will protect your lenses from the sun's harsh light. It also helps your camera record color more accurately. My other favorite filter is a circular polarizing filter. This filter will help you get truer images of the sky and the water.
Flashlight
Flashlights are good to have on hand for effects in your photos. You never know when you'll need to do some painting with light. It can also be used to help you focus.
Tripod
Tripods are essential for holding your camera steady when you have long exposure times and need to keep your camera completely still. Having a tripod on hand could be the difference between a great photo and a completely blurry photo.
